How to Burglar Proof Your Apartment

In Home Defense Tips by homedefense

If you’ve recently moved into a new apartment or you are simply concerned about the safety of your current residence, you should know that there are many affordable and easy ways to burglar proof your home. All it takes is a little work on your part, and you can make yourself, your family, and your possessions much safer.

Below are several different safety practices and products that would be useful to consider in making your home more secure. You may want to first assess your apartment’s safety policies and procedures, when it comes to keeping your living space secure. Always check with your landlord before you purchase any products for your rental property. As with most rental agreements, there will be rules and regulations according to what you can and can’t do with your residence. You always need to have approval before you make any changes to your apartment including those specified below. You might want to also ask your Landlord or rental association to purchase any of these safety products for the property before you spend your own money doing it.

Remember too, that when it comes to purchasing and carrying your own personal devices, such as self-defense weapons, you must understand and follow the laws in your own state and/or residential community.

Choose a solid wood or metal front door

The first and easiest way into your house is through the door. Believe it or not, there are lots of people who forget to lock their doors and this becomes an open invitation for burglars. So let’s make sure we all lock our doors first and foremost.

Next, you need to make sure the material of your door is strong enough to not be easily breakable. The main entrance door should be built with solid wood or even metal. Then you need to add high quality deadbolt locks in addition to the inbuilt lock of the doorknob. Adding a dead bolt lock will provide additional safety for you when you are inside the house as this cannot be easily compromised to gain entrance into the apartment. These kinds of additional locks aid to discourage burglars as they might feel a little intimidated by the hard to compromise locks.

Another tip in securing your door is to make sure the hinges are not exposed and the frame is securely embedded in the wall with long screws. If you are able to secure your door with these safety procedures and products, your home will be much more safe- unless you forget to lock your door!

lnstall a home security system

One great way to secure your apartment is to install a good home security system provided by a well-known company. You can also DIY with the new security systems on the market like LiveWatch and Simplisafe. All kinds of security systems are available for all types of residences, whether an apartment, a condo, or duplexes, or a stand-alone house with a large property. Normally, an apartment security system will have at least a window motion sensor and door alarm device. There are others equipped with driveway alarms and motion sensors. Home alarms can be connected directly to police and emergency dispatch, which is particularly of interest for frequent travelers and people who live alone, as well as remote homes that do not have nearby neighbors.

Add CCTV cameras to your security system

Camera surveillance is another kind of security and is especially useful for those with large houses or spacious yards and property areas. You can also use this with apartments, condos or a duplex. You need to ask the owner if you can secure a camera outside your apartment door to monitor any movement and record motion in your front door area. You can also buy a video doorbell to put on the front door to record any motion when a person comes to the front door. The video doorbells can also alert your cell phone that someone has approached the door. I have installed one in my home and it works great alerting me to activity.

Secure your windows with curtains, blinds and locks

It is good for you to get blinds or curtains for your windows that expose any areas in your apartment to prevent burglars from looking into your home. You need to have locks on your windows and sliding glass doors. For your sliding glass doors, you need to install reliable locks. On doors with glass panes or windows directly to the side, add an extra key lock so that the door cannot be opened from the inside easily, should the glass be broken in a burglary to attempt to break the glass, reach in, and flip the lock to enter through the door.

If you have a sliding glass door, you can use different devices to secure the door from anyone pulling it open or taking it off the tracks to gain entry. I used to put a thick stick in between the wall and the sliding glass door to prevent anyone from pulling the door open. If you live in an apartment, condo, or duplex with a sliding glass , make sure you add the additional locks suggested in this post that offers more information about sliding glass door locks.

Add motion detection lights

A well-lit home is generally a safer home. Consider having motion sensor lights put in, which will alert anyone inside the apartment to outside movement surrounding your place. You can also use timers on flood lights around your apartment, as well as a few lights arranged around the yard. This is assuming you rent a town-home, rental home, or you live in a first floor apartment. Having outdoor lights can look decorative, but also eliminate large dark areas where burglars can conceal themselves. Blinds and curtains should be kept closed, particularly at night, so as not to advertise the possessions in your home to the whole neighborhood and apartment complex you live in.

Keep a pepper spray or stun gun

Pepper sprays and stun guns are considered to be among the most popular as well as effective self-defense products available on the market today. They are non-lethal, easily used by nearly everyone, and can provide fast and effective defense against an assault. However, it is crucial to understand how to properly use these weapons and learn the limitations of both when planning their use for personal and property protection. Both the pepper spray and stun gun should be placed next to you, perhaps in your nightstand, during the night while you sleep. That way, if you hear someone breaking into your apartment, you will be equipped to defend yourself.

To understand the use of pepper spray, it would be beneficial to have an understanding of the actual spray itself. Originally, defensive sprays were made from man made chemical irritants. The chemicals in pepper spray are commonly referred to as CS (orthochlorobenzalmalonitrile), CN (alphachloroacetaphenone) or tear gas. These
sprays cause irritation to the mucous membranes. This will result in tearing of the eyes and a strong stinging pain of the eyes, nose and throat. When you use this weapon for self-defense, this will allow you to escape or incapacitate the intruder. Once you escape, you can call the police. If you want to read more important information on We have a more detailed article on pepper spray and how to use it in self-defense here. Stun guns work by striking the attacker with a high voltage to stop any attack. You use the stun gun effectively, when you take the stun gun and press it against the attacker while pressing the button to deliver the high voltage. This will cause the contraction of muscles, temporarily paralyzing the assaulter. Once they are immobilized, you can escape. We have a more detailed article on stun gun information and usage here.
