How to Secure Your Home without an Alarm System

In Home Defense Tips by homedefense

There are some great ways to secure your house while you are away on vacation, at work all day, or even while you are home. Protection of your family at home is the number one priority because personal items that get stolen can be replaced.

Home security systems are great, but here are some other ways to protect your home. If you don’t have the financial means to buy an alarm system, there are many other tips and tricks to keeping your family safe and your home protected. In this day and age, we need to be smart in how we operate our home and keep it and our family safe. The following is a list of more affordable ways you can secure your home without using an alarm system. These strategies are designed for easy implementation and prove to be effective in protecting your home.

Dog Patrol

The family dog can be one of the best ways to deter anyone from breaking into your home. Having a family dog definitely prevents possible robbers from targeting your house. You can also sleep easy knowing the dog will alert you of any night time intruders.  If you are considering getting a dog, here is some information for you on the best choices for home protection:

Guard Dogs

These particular dogs can really do some damage if someone breaks into your home. These breeds include: Dobermans, German Shepherds and Rottweilers.

Medium to Small Dogs

These dogs may not have the bite or size, but they sure can bark loud. Having a dog that can warn you of any potential danger is often just as effective in keeping criminals away.  Some of these breeds are just as good at attacking if anyone try’s entering your home.  Medium size dogs include Australian cattle dog, chow chow, Kerry blue terrier or a shar pei. The smaller dogs include beagle, Boston terrier, bull terrier, Chihuahua and cocker spaniel.

I lived in the farmland of Ohio where we had a medium sized mixed dog that weighed about 90 pounds wet.  I remember as a child, I was riding my bike from atop a hill on the road when the neighbors German Shepherd started chasing me down the hill and onto our property.  I was peddling for my life and got to the drive way yelling for our dog, Blondie, for help. My dog came running full tilt around the house and attacked the German Shepherd dog to protect me. Blondie easily won and sent that dog scrambling home.

Dog barking alarm- If your family is unable to get a dog, you can always purchase a dog alarm that is activated by motion. These can be equally effective, without having to care for a pet.

Smart Homes

Today’s homes are incredible with the technology you can use to make your home automated. Just like the “Home Alone” movie, you always want to make your house look like someone is there even if no one is home.  Here are three easy strategies to consider for additional protection to your home:
Automated Lights – Use smart technology to turn the lights on and off while you are on vacation or even away for the day. You need to make your home always look like you are there.

Smart Led Lights and Plugs – Use the smart apps for the home to control your lights, furnace or even electronics while you are away. You can use this again while on vacation or even when you are gone for the day.

Smart Garage Door – How many of you have accidentally left your garage door open all day or night? My wife and I have done this multiple times, and thank goodness no one entered my home. New systems like a Smart Garage door will let you know if the door is open as you can check it and then close the door if necessary.

Lights, Camera, and Action!

With today’s technology, you can capture criminals on a video-recording. This makes it easy for police to go after any criminal who has broken the law, since you have the evidence of them committing a crime.
Doorbell Cameras – We have all seen the package thieves on the news or YouTube. These new doorbells will not only record motion but alert you on the phone when anyone steps on your porch. Most criminals know these doorbells capture their image so most smart ones will stay clear of your home. My doorbell camera even has night vision for recording at night.

Surveillance Cameras – You can place cameras in several key areas of your home to deter intruders. There are many different systems that range from very simple to quite complex, so make sure you understand what you want before buying what is best for your home.

Lock Your Doors and Windows

It may seem like a simple thing to do, but I know many people who don’t lock their doors and windows at night. It’s important that you make it a habit to check every door and window before you leave your house and before you go to bed. I know there are people who love the fresh air throughout the night, but when you leave your windows open, you are giving criminals a way into your house. Be safe and secure while you are away from your house and when you are sleeping. Keep your doors locked and windows shut. Here are two options for locking your door:
Door Locks – Get a dead bolt to secure your door. The doorknob lock provides no security because anyone can use a credit card to get through that easily.

Door Jammers or Braces – You can also get something like a door jammer or brace that will prevent a criminal from kicking in the door.

Security Signs

You can buy a security alarm sign and place it in your yard even if you do not have a security system. I have a security sign in my front flower bed warning people I have an alarm system even though I do not have one.  This is one way to fool the intruders and prevent them from breaking into your house. They are inexpensive and easy to put up.

Social Media

If you are traveling out of town for work or going on vacation, do not share that you are away from the house on social media. While it’s fun to post pictures of your experience while you are away, you are virtually sending the message to the online world that your home is empty- consequently inviting criminals to break into your home. It’s important to keep your travel information between you and your family. You can post all the pictures and news events you want when you return.
When I was living in my first home, the neighbor behind me was broken into by high school kids. They stole the teenager’s Xbox and games, because they knew the family was out of town. The teen had told everyone about their travel plans when he was at school

These strategies, products, and ideas are all very effective, easy to implement, and affordable in cost to that of an Alarm Security System. Make sure you consider them all and make these simple changes, so that your home and loved ones are safe and secure.
